Canon Resource Link: Tomorrowland Wiki
Character History:
Athena was created in 1957 by a man named David Nix. She was intended to be a recruiter for his company, Plus Ultra. Plus Ultra dealt with inventions and creative thinking, and David Nix was the driving force behind the creation of a city only accessible through time travel and a gateway to an alternate universe called Tomorrowland. Athena assisted David in recruiting bright minds and creative thinkers to Tomorrowland, though she considered her greatest discovery to be a young boy named Frank Walker. She met Frank during the 1964 New York World's Fair, when David was openly recruiting individuals to join Plus Ultra. Although Frank was turned away by David, Athena saw the potential in him and sought him out on her own. She was scolded by David afterward, with a comment that she was starting to go against her programming. It was the first time she was seen beginning to develop a conscious mind of her own.
After giving him a Tomorrowland pin and instructing him on how to find his way to the city, she left with David and rejoined Frank once he had found his way to her home. David allowed Frank to stay, and it was then that Athena and Frank became friends. As the years went by, Frank developed feelings for Athena. Her friendship with Frank helped Athena develop a consciousness of her own, in which she began to think and feel independently of the programming David created her with. She never understood the feelings Frank showed her, but was perceptive enough to realize that he had romantic intentions for her. She began to develop what she thought was a fault in her programming, which were feelings in return for him. But she never could understand these feelings or how to express them, and she knew that whatever Frank felt was wrong because she wasn't human like he was.
It took a long time for Frank to find out that Athena wasn't human, and when he realized that she was an audio-animatronic, he was heartbroken. Crushed by the fact that he felt Athena couldn't love him in return, he lashed out at his childhood friend, telling her that she was essentially a monster for letting him love her. As Frank grew into adulthood, his ideas became more radical, and his upset and anger toward Athena and David Nix ended with him being exiled from Tomorrowland. Athena watched Frank Walker leave home in 1984, and was taken off recruitment duty by David. He didn't want a repeat Frank, and knew that Athena's interaction with Frank over the years had ruined the programming that he had built her with. He dismantled the Plus Ultra corporation, as well as the recruitment program. After calling Athena obsolete, he threatened to dismantle her, causing Athena to run away and leave Tomorrowland.
Over the next thirty years, Athena took it upon herself to keep an eye on Frank. She knew the way back to Earth and could move back and forth between dimensions. She also continued to do her job of recruiting, despite only having a few Tomorrowland pins left. She felt it was up to her to find the next generation of great minds that would prevent the destruction of Earth and the decline of Tomorrowland. It was in the middle of attempting to get back to Tomorrowland that she spied a girl named Casey Newton. Curious about how intelligent the girl was, Athena followed her for several days and nights. It was when Athena was convinced that Casey was someone who was a dreamer like her, one that would never give up, that a pin was left behind for Casey to find.
It took a good deal of convincing Casey to join the cause, but eventually Athena was able to. Together, the two girls made their way to find Frank Walker. Athena was shocked to see how old and cynical he had become, and how much contempt he seemed to hold for her. Time had not been kind to Frank Walker, and Athena couldn't understand the angry man obsessed with conspiracy theories and destruction that he had become. After manipulating Frank into helping her and Casey, the three return to Tomorrowland in an attempt to save both realities.
Abilities/Special Powers: Athena is an audio-animatronic with a nuclear core. She's a robot. A robot that can 100% pass as a human girl between the age of 11-14. Her nuclear core means she is able to self-destruct and creates a huge explosion when she does. She is also able to have her self-destruct mechanism triggered on accident in the midst of being attacked. She has super human strength, speed, agility, and the ability to have a photographic memory thanks to the technology she was created with. She is seen having x-ray vision in the film, and is also shown being able to withstand a great deal of damage when attacked. Because she is a robot, she never ages, although it is mentioned that she may be able to transfer her programming to another audio-animatronic unit if she ever needed or wanted a different body. While she has a great deal of power built into her, she only is seen using it if absolutely necessary. She typically prefers to pass as an average girl, but understands that sometimes she has to stand out in order to save the day.
Third-Person Sample:
Wonderland is supposed to be fictional. She calls up the information she has stored about Wonderland, all of it relating back to an author named Lewis Carroll. Wonderland is not real, her programming tells her. But the logic that she's come to develop on her own tells her that Tomorrowland shouldn't be real either, and yet it is. So she easily accepts the fact that she's found herself in a place called Wonderland, but the apparent lack of rolling heads or creatures called mome-raths make her wonder if it's the same one that appears in the story.
Assuming answers will come with exploration, she moves off of the oversized chess board and toward the mansion nearby. It's not a long walk at all, but it gives her enough time to think about her current situation. Both Tomorrowland and Earth need her to get Casey Newton to the exact place and moment in time that she's needed in order to save everything. Neither Casey or Frank appear to be here with her. That poses a problem, one that she's not sure how to solve just yet.
As she walks into the mansion and takes to looking around, it's not difficult to figure out the process that new arrivals are supposed to go through. There's pamphlets that tell her exactly what to do. She's grateful for the fact that no one stops to question her arrival here, or whether or not she needs help. She looks young, she knows, maybe only thirteen at the most. But her appearance has nothing to do with what she's able to accomplish, and it's with the mind of a level headed adult that she walks upstairs and finds an empty room to claim as her own.
It's in the closet there that she finds a fully stocked wardrobe, filled with dresses that she wore back in the 1950's and 1960's. They instantly make her smile, and she doesn't hesitate in putting on a familiar sky blue dress that reminds her of the day she met Frank back in 1964. She takes a moment to tidy her hair, wash her face, and put on new stockings and shoes too. It's only when she's put together that she methodically goes through the pamphlet and completes all the suggestions for new arrivals in order.
She scours the network for mention or sign of Frank and Casey, but not finding any, she decides to make mental notes about the residents she's able to observe interacting. Names and things that are mentioned are filed away in the back of her long term memory unit, and she hopes her processing chip wasn't damaged in the electrical shock that she endured arriving in Wonderland. Once she's certain she has an idea of which adults to seek out with the pretense of being a lost little girl that needs help, and a list of younger residents that she might be able to befriend and recruit, she sets out to explore the mansion further. It's going to take some time to manually search for Frank, but she's willing to do whatever it takes in order to ensure his survival.
First-Person Sample:
Hello, Wonderland.
[The girl on the video is prim and proper, in a bright blue dress that looks like it comes from the 1950's. A bright blue hair ribbon ties back her ringlet curled ponytail, and the demure smile on her face makes her definitely seem like someone caught in an era that isn't their own. Slowly, her head tips to the side. She looks curious, like any adventurous little girl in a new place might.]
I've been here a full hour now, and have completed numerous searches to the community network. There aren't any traces of Frank Walker or Casey Newton present, though mistakes are always possible.
[The corner of her mouth curves upward into something resembling a smirk, as if she finds what she's just said humorous.]
I understand that I've been misplaced here, and that any attempts to escape are futile. I don't mind being here, as long as I know that Frank and Casey are safe. I want to thank whoever created the endless closets, however. Being able to wear my favorite dress again is something I didn't think would ever be possible.
